Semavi Eyice

Semavi Eyice (* 1923 in Istanbul) is a Turkish art historian. His specialty is the Byzantine art and the art history of Istanbul.

He grew up in Istanbul, attended in the Kadıköy district elementary school and then graduated from Galatasaray Lisesi until 1943. During the Second World War, he went to Germany to learn German. During this time he heard at the Universities of Vienna and Berlin lectures in archeology, history and art history. In 1945, he returned to Turkey to continue at the İstanbul Üniversitesi the study of art history, with Ernst Diez he graduated with a thesis on Istanbul's Minarets 1948. He then worked as a research assistant in the Department of Art History and received his PhD in 1952 with the work Side'nin Bizans Dönemine Ait Yapıları (Buildings of the Byzantine era in Side ). In 1955, he was with the book Istanbul'da Son Devir Bizans Mimarisi ( architecture of the late Byzantine period in Istanbul) to associate professor. In 1964 he was promoted to full professor at the newly established Chair of Byzantine Art. Throughout his teaching career he lectured at numerous institutions, including in Turkey at Hacettepe University in Ankara and Istanbul's Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul, abroad at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, the Sorbonne and at the Universities of Geneva and Bologna. In addition to teaching, he worked in archaeological fieldwork, including in the area of Binbirkilise, in various Byzantine settlements around Silifke in Cilicia, including Karakabaklı, and in East Thrace.

He has published books, journal articles and contributions to encyclopaedic works. Eyice is a member of several research companies, including the German Archaeological Institute. In 1955 he was awarded the Order of the Legion d' honneur and in the same year, a price of the Turkish Academy of Sciences.

Eyice retired in 1990. He is married with Kamran Yalgin since 1954.
