Semen Hulak-Artemovsky

Semyon Stepanovich Hulak - Artemowski ( Семен Степанович Гулак - Артемовський, Semen Stepanovych Hulak - Artemovskyi, Semyon Gulak Artemovsky, * 4 Februarjul / February 16 1813greg in Horodyschtsche, .. † 5 Apriljul / April 17 1873greg in Moscow.. ) was a Ukrainian opera singer ( baritone) and composer, actor and playwright.

The nephew of Petro Hulak - Artemowski first attended the theological seminary in Kiev. He was then a student of Mikhail Glinka and studied from 1839 to 1842 Singing in St. Petersburg and Florence. Since 1842 he was bass-baritone at the Mariinsky Theatre and the Italian Opera in St. Petersburg. His repertoire included the title role in Ruslan in Glinka's Ruslan and Lyudmila Mikhail, the Masetto in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Gaetano Donizetti's Linda di Antonio Chamouni and Lord Ashton in the Lucia di Lammermoor.

Hulak Artemowskis - known work is the comic opera Saporoshez sa Dunajem ( The Zaporozhye on the Danube, 1863), considered the first Ukrainian National Opera.
