Semily District

The Okres Semily (German: District Semil ) was a territorial entity in the Liberec Region (Region Reichenberg ) in the Czech Republic. The Okresy were roughly comparable to the districts in Germany, the district administrations were dissolved on 31 December 2002. The district is located in the southeastern part of North Bohemia and extends from the Bohemian Paradise to Krkonoše.

75,000 people live to 699 km ² in 65 municipalities and 208 districts, nine cities where 60 % of the population lives in turn. The special feature of the district is that not the city Semily has the most inhabitants, but Turnov.

In total there are 17,000 companies registered in the district. The largest role is still the industry. The formerly dominant textile industry plays today hardly an issue as opposed to engineering, food and glass industries. 51 % of the population is employed, the wages are below the average of the circle and of the country, unemployment is at 6.5%.

Tourism is one of the important sources of income throughout the year. Krkonoše with the recreation centers Harrachov, Benecko, Harrachov, Vysoke nad Jizerou are not only winter sports areas but also venues of international sporting events. Český Ráj is a nature reserve with rare plants and historic buildings such as the medieval castle Trosky with the legendary Kozákov, a reference of gems. Typical of the Bohemian Paradise are the sandy and rocky landscapes, a paradise for climbers. A world rarity are the Bozkovské jeskyně.
