The Semmelweis University (Hungarian: Semmelweis Egyetem Orvostudományi; Latin: Universitas Budapestiensis de Semmelweis Nominata ) is a public university for medical subjects and Sports in Budapest, Hungary. Was named the university after the Budapest physician Ignaz Semmelweis.

History

The college was founded in 1635 by Péter Pázmány as a university for theology and law in Nagyszombat. The medical school was opened in 1769 by Maria Theresa and moved 1777 to Buda. A few years later it was moved to the other side of the Danube to Pest. Since 1848 it is a national university. The second Hygienic Institute in Europe was built at the Semmelweis University. 1951, the medical faculty was separated from the University of Budapest and a few years later enriched by a dental and pharmaceutical faculty.

Since 1969, the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty, the University was named after the former Professor Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis, the discoverer of puerperal fever, named.

Its primary objective is to make the German -speaking medical school in Budapest for student -friendly. Asklepios Medical School in Hamburg

In September 2008, the Faculty of Medicine, Semmelweis University opened in cooperation with the Asklepios clinics under the name Asklepios Medical School ( also called Asklepios Campus Hamburg ) an external campus in Hamburg. There, students of Semmelweis University can complete the clinical semester of their medical studies under Hungarian curriculum in German language.
