Senate (Romania)

The Senate ( Senatul ) was created with the Constitution of 1991 as the upper chamber (upper house ) of the Romanian Parliament. The Senate stands in the tradition of the existing 1919-1940 Senate of Greater Romania.

The members are elected for four years by a combined direct and proportional representation. The last election was held on 30 November 2008. The Senate currently has 143 members. The current chairman is Mircea Geoană (PSD ).
