The Riu de la Senia ( Catalan, formerly known as Riu d' Ulldecona; Spanish: Río Cenia ) is a 49 km long river in the Spanish provinces of Castellón and Tarragona. At the largest haul of its course it forms the border between the two provinces and between the regions of Valencia and Catalonia.

Course

Its source is located 1200 meters high in the mountains of the Ports de Tortosa - Beseit Munizip in La Pobla de Benifassà in the comarca Maestrazgo.

Its waters are then accumulated to 477 meters in the dam Ulldecona, still in the municipality of Puebla de Benifasar. This reservoir has an area of 116 hectares and a capacity of 11 million cubic meters, the only regulation of the river and is used for irrigation.

From the reservoir, the river passes through passages with large gradient, which leads to a strong oxygen enrichment, and very lush vegetation and habitat for many fish. Later, before arriving in La Senia in the comarca Montsiā, there are branches for irrigation, which reaches 2360 hectares in this area.

Just before La Senia ( the town belongs to the province of Tarragona ) reached the river, the border between Catalonia and Valencia, from then to its mouth it forms the border between these two regions.

From this point on the Senio receives virtually no natural inflows more and the water quality deteriorates significantly.

Near the village Alcanar he enters the plane of Vinaròs, he crosses to its outlet into the Mediterranean.
