Senmaya (Iwate)

Senmaya (Japanese千 厩 町, Semmaya -chō or Senmaya -chō ) was a district town ( chō ) in the district Higashiiwai, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. The name means " thousand stalls ", but no more horses is now operated.

History

On 20 September 2005 Senmaya was incorporated together with the cities Daitō and Higashiyama and the villages in the district of Kawasaki and Murone Higashiiwai, as well as the city Hanaizumi district Nishiiwai in the independent city Ichinoseki.

As of 2003, the city had 13,151 inhabitants and a population density of 146.38 persons per km ². The total area was 89.84 km ².

Attractions

Its most famous attraction is the Meotoiwa of Shinto Shrine Yae -jinja (弥 荣 神社), is prayed to for fertility and the blessing of children. The Meotoiwa is a rock formation that resembles a penis copulating, and there is a large gilded statue penis and other phallic objects.

In Buddhist temple Daiko -ji (大 光寺) with adjoining cemetery in the surrounding hills, there is a wooden statue of Yakushi Nyorai from the Heian period, which was a listed building of the prefecture.

Traffic

The main highways are the National Road 284 Rikuzentakata or Ichinoseki and the National Road 456 to Morioka or Kesennuma. Senmaya has three taxi companies and bus services to Ichinoseki and Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture. On the rail network Senmaya is connected with the JR East Ofunato line that anband it westward with Ichinoseki inland and to the east with Kesennuma on the coast. The last train leaves at 20:30 clock.

Education

Senmaya has several nursery schools, five primary schools ( year 1-6), a middle school ( Year 7-9) and one prefecture -run secondary school ( Year 10-12), the Iwate- kenritsu Senmaya Koko with about 600 students. Select the high school students a specialization in agriculture or crafts, and the school has a school garden with vegetables and rice fields.

Shopping

In the shopping street in the center of Senmaya to find shops for daily needs, beyond the shopping center S * PIA offers a small department store, supermarket, bakery, bottle shop, shoe store, hairdresser, Dry Cleaning, restaurants and a 100 - yen shop. Next door is the Sunday Home Center with DIY and agricultural needs.

Furthermore Senmaya has three supermarkets, several drug stores, a bookshop, a video library, a 100 - yen store and several gas stations and grocery stores open all day.

Except for a few restaurants and bars, there are no significant recreational evening.
