Senol Güneş (2011)

Senol Güneş ( born June 1, 1952 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player and current coach.

Playing career

Senol Güneş started his career as a goalkeeper in the Turkish amateur club Erdogdu Gençlik before he later moved to first division side Trabzonspor. There he stood for 15 years in goal and picked 1975-1984 with the team six times the Turkish league title three times and the Turkish Cup.

Coaching career

After end of his career as a player Güneş started as an assistant coach in his parent club Trabzonspor and was appointed in 1994 to head coach. After narrowly missing the championship in 1996 with Trabzonspor, he left the club and coached after Boluspor, Istanbulspor, then again Trabzonspor and later Antalyaspor and Sakaryaspor.

In 2000 he was appointed a surprise to the Turkish national team coach and successor of Mustafa Denizli. After his team had won the second place in the standings in the World Cup qualifiers in 2002, Turkey qualified after more than 48 years back for a World Cup. In the overdue relegation match Austria was beaten 5-0. With the Football World Cup 2002 in South Korea and Japan with the Turkish national football team he managed to the semi-finals and winning the third place play-off in 2003, his team managed third place in the Confederations Cup.

When his team failed to qualify for Euro 2004 in November 2003 by a defeat in the relegation game against the Latvians, Güneş was dismissed. Then he coached from 2004 to 2005 for a third time Trabzonspor. After poor performance of his team again was followed by the dismissal. Since then, he stood by the South Korean FC Seoul as a coach under contract.

On 1 December 2009 Şenol Güneş signed a 3.5 - year contract again at Trabzonspor. In May 2010, the team won under his leadership with a 3-1 victory in the final against Fenerbahce win the Turkish Cup competition. Three months later, in August, he was able to pick up another title: the Turkish Super Cup. Trabzonspor won 3-0 against the then reigning Turkish champions Bursaspor. After a series of disappointing results, he resigned on January 28, 2013 from his office. The club accepted his resignation and made a few days later, the former player Tolunay Kafka as Güneş ' successor before.
