Sensory gating

Sensory gating refers to a process of sensory stimulus processing.

The principle of sensory gating is that the processing of other, irrelevant for a particular task stimuli is suppressed during the processing of a given stimulus. The neurophysiological basis is the inhibition of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and GABA receptors in the thalamus. The measurement is performed using EEG or prepulse inhibition.

Sensory gating can be used as a diagnostic criterion for various neuropsychological disorders such as schizophrenia or Alzheimer 's disease.
