Serafino Vannutelli

Serafino Cardinal Vannutelli (* November 26, 1834 in Genazzano, Province of Rome, Italy, † August 19, 1915 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Serafino Vannutelli received priestly ordination in 1860 and worked as a professor of Catholic theology and papal diplomat. In 1869 he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Nicaea. He received his episcopal consecration on July 18, 1869 Costantino Patrizi Naro.

In 1875, he was Apostolic Nuncio to Belgium and 1880 nuncio in Austria - Hungary.

Pope Leo XIII. took him on 14 March 1887 as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Sabina on the College of Cardinals. In 1888 he was Prefect, 1891 Chamberlain College of Cardinals. From 1893 he has held for six months, the Office of the Archbishop of Bologna, before he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Frascati. On November 20, 1899, the appointment would come to Kardinalgroßpönitentiar and 1903-1908 Vannutelli was secretary of the Holy Inquisition. In 1913 he became dean of the College of Cardinals.

In the papal election in 1903 he was regarded as a candidate of the Triple Alliance.

Vincenzo Vannutelli, his successor as Cardinal Dean, was his brother.
