The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Serbian Српска академија наука и уметности / Srpska akademija nauka i umetnosti, short SANU ) is the most famous academy in Serbia. Founded in 1886 as the Royal Serbian Academy ( Srpska kraljevska akademija ) was in 1947 renamed the Serbian Academy of Sciences ( Srpska akademija nauka ). Since 1960, she wears her current name.

History

The Academy was founded on 1 November 1886 under the Decree-Law of the Parliament, which gave King Milan Obrenović I. the selection of the founding members. This could then select the other members. The first 16 members of the four departments of the Academy were appointed by the King on April 5, 1887.

On June 30, 1947, from the Royal Academy since the monarchy was abolished, the Serbian Academy of Science with six, since 1998, with eight departments.

Precursor

The precursor of the Academy was the Society of Serbian Scholarship, founded on May 31, 1842, ( Društvo Srpska slovesnosti ), which on 29 July 1864 in the Serbian Learned Society ( Srpsko učeno društvo ) had risen. On May 13, 1886, this company was dissolved to make way for the Royal Academy vacate. Because of the protests Srpsko učeno društvo was reopened on 25 July 1887. After a ministerial decree then in 1892 was incorporated into the Royal Academy.
