Serge Chermayeff

Serge Ivan Chermayeff ( born October 8, 1900 in Grozny, Chechnya, † 8 May 1996 in Wellfleet, Massachusetts ) was an American architect.

Born into a wealthy Jewish family of an oil company belonged, he moved to England at an early age. In the 1920s he studied art and architecture, including in Germany. After graduating, he first became a designer for interiors at a London firm. Later he became a partner of the German architect Erich Mendelsohn, with whom he created impressive building modern British architecture. This includes the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill -on-Sea. In 1940 he emigrated to the United States. Here he became director of the Institute of Design in Chicago and later became head of the Department of Architecture at the elite universities Harvard and Yale later.

Chermayeff has two known sons. Ivan Chermayeff is a designer of brand logos, such as National Geographic. Peter Chermayeff is an architect who is known for his aquarium.
