Sergey Demyashkevich

Sergei Nikolaevich Demjaschkewitsch (Russian: Сергей Николаевич Демяшкевич, Belarusian Сяргей Дзямяшкевіч / Syarhey Dsjamjaschkewitsch; born August 28, 1966) is a former Soviet and Belarusian wrestler. He was 1990 world champion in the heavyweight division and won at the 1992 Olympic Games bronze medal in Greco- Roman style in the heavyweight division.

Career

Sergei Demjaschkewitsch grew up in Belarus and began as a teenager in 1977 with the rings. He concentrated on the Greco- Roman style. As a student, was the blond giant, who soon weighed 100 kg at a height of 1.88 m, a member of " Burewestnik " or the University Sports Club Minsk. In the junior level he was able to prevail against strong competition in the Soviet Union, not quite. In 1988, he was however used in a World Cup tournament in Athens in the light heavyweight and won this tournament before the Greeks Anagastopoulos, the Cubans Cruz and the world champion in 1985 in the light heavyweight Michael Houck from the U.S..

It was first used in an international championship, the World Championships in Martigny / Switzerland at light heavyweight in 1989. There, however, he could not fulfill the expectations placed in him completely, because he lost against the two German competitors Roger Gries of Moembris -Königshofen and Maik Bull man to Frankfurt ( Oder) and have to settle for 5th place.

In 1990 he moved to the heavyweight division to escape the debilitating detraining. In this weight class he took immediate foot and was at the World Championships in Rome in convincing style world heavyweight champion. On the way to his victory, he suggested, inter alia, the Olympic champion from 1988 Andrzej Wronski from Poland and the world champion from 1989 Gerhard sky from Aschaffenburg, so his two immediate predecessors as champions. From the Soviet head coach Gennadi Sapunov he has even been called the best wrestler of the entire World Cup.

Just think about how in Rome Sergei Demjaschkewitsch was also at the European Championships in 1990 in Aschaffenburg. There he won ahead of Andreas Steinbach from Germany and Sándor Major from Hungary. All the more surprising was his defeat in the World Cup this year in Varna / Bulgaria. He found his master at this championship in the Cuban Héctor Milián. Milián, one expresses in ground combat strong wrestler, brought in ground combat against Demjaschkewitsch out such a huge point lead that this its residue could not catch up.

At the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 and met Demjaschkewitsch Milián in the decision- fighting each other again. Again won Milián, who thus became Olympic champion. Sergei Demjaschkewitsch even had to leave the silver medal the Americans Dennis Koslowski and be content with the bronze medal.

In 1993, Sergei Demjaschkewitsch after the collapse of the Soviet Union at the European Championships in Istanbul for Belarus. In the heavy- weight for it a second title win was achieved in a European Championship. Towards this title, he defeated among others Olympic champion Andrzej Wronski ( 6-2 points) and the immensely strong Russian starter Ibrahim Tschawtschalow (4-0 points). At the 1993 World Championships in Stockholm, Andrzej Wronski revenge for this defeat. He defeated Sergei Demjaschkewitsch already in the 2nd round 6-0 points and threw this so out of the race. There remained only the 9th place for Sergei Demjaschkewitsch.

After this defeat Sergei Demjaschkewitsch ended his wrestler 's career.
