Sergio Balanzino

Sergio Silvio Balanzino ( born June 20, 1934 in Bologna ) is an Italian high school teacher, former diplomat and Deputy Secretary General of NATO.

Balanzino studied in Rome Law and then worked at the Italian Foreign Ministry as a diplomat, especially in the economic sector. In the 1960s, he entered the service of NATO. In the following years he worked again for the Italian Foreign Ministry, most recently as Ambassador to Canada. In 1994 he took over after the death of NATO Secretary General Manfred Wörner temporarily whose official duties following the resignation of Willy Claes again. Balanzino remained from 1994 to 2001 as Deputy Secretary General of NATO.

Sergio Balanzino now works as a university lecturer at Loyola University Chicago Rome Center in Rome.
