Sergio Goretti

Sergio Goretti ( born April 2, 1929 in Città di Castello, Perugia, Italy, † June 21, 2012 in Assisi ) was bishop of Assisi - Nocera Umbra - Gualdo Cattaneo.

Life

Sergio Goretti studied philosophy at the seminary in Città di Castello and Assisi and Catholic theology and law at the Pontifical Roman Seminary in Rome. He received on April 5, 1953 in the Cathedral of Città di Castello to the priesthood. He was a pastor in Città di Castello and Vicar of the youth of Catholic Action and religion teachers at high schools in the city. In 1955 he was working for the Roman Curia, and was responsible for catechetical questions and secretary of the International Council for Catechesis in the Congregation for the Clergy. From 1955 to 1960 he was private secretary to the prefect, Cardinal Pietro Ciriaci. He was one of the founders of the " Centro student Francesco Romano ". From 1960 to 1980 he worked as Synodalrichter in the Diocesan Tribunal of the Lazio region, based in Rome. From 1972 to 1980 he was a professor at the Pontifical Salesian University. He was contributor to various magazines and newspapers.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 14 December 1980 Bishop of Assisi, and at the same time as Bishop of Nocera Umbra - Gualdo Cattaneo and donated him on 6 January 1981 in St. Peter's episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Giovanni Canestri, Auxiliary Bishop of Rome, and Joaquim Belchior da Silva Neto CM, Bishop of Luz.

With the union of the bishoprics of Assisi, and Nocera Umbra - Gualdo Cattaneo on 30 September 1986 to the diocese of Assisi - Nocera Umbra - Gualdo Cattaneo he became its first bishop.

Sergio Goretti from 1992 to 1997 Member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, and was from 1990 to 2005 president of the secretariat of the Italian Bishops' Conference for Ecumenism and Dialogue. He was from 1990 to 1995 Member of the Permanent Council of the CEI and from 1996 to 2005, President of the Episcopal Conference of Umbria. He devoted himself to the people after the devastating earthquake in Umbria and the Marches in 1997, especially for the reconstruction of the damaged Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi.

On 19 November 2005, Benedict XVI accepted. its age-related resignation.
