Sergio Mantovani
Sergio Mantovani ( May 22nd, 1929 in Milan, † February 23, 2001 ) was an Italian racing driver.
Mantovani was a businessman before he initially began as a hobby with the racing. With a Maserati he started in 1953, together with Juan Manuel Fangio at the Targa Florio and was third. For the 1954 Formula 1 season Maserati signed him as a works driver. The reward of his commitment were each the fifth place in the GPs from Germany and Switzerland.
When training for the non -counting for the World Cup GP of Turin in March 1955 he suffered a serious accident, as a result it had to be amputated the left foot. Mantovani tried to return to motorsport with a prosthesis, but soon realized the futility of his attempts and stepped back from the 26- year motorsport.
Then Mantovani was for many years a leading member of the Italian motor sport authority. He died in 2001 at the age of 71 years.
