Serie A (women's football)

The Serie A is the highest division in the Italian women's football. It was founded in 1973 and is one of the oldest national leagues in European women's football.

History

Back in 1968, was first played by an Italian championship. However, there were two competing leagues. Only in 1973 could be agreed and from then on the Italian champion is determined in Serie A. Over the years, it always comes back for renaming and over dispute. So it happens that one and the same club under three different names champion.

Mode

The league consists of twelve teams. Each club plays twice against every other team. Thus, each team comes to 22 season games. The champion qualifies for the UEFA Women's Champions League, while the two last-place must descend into the A2 series.
