Sermersooq

Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq ( German about: commune with lots of ice ) is a Greenlandic large community with a population of 21,813 (as of 2012) in an area of ​​635,600 km ². The seat of local government is the Greenland capital Nuuk.

Location

Sermersooq lies to the west and east of Greenland. In the north the municipality borders the unincorporated area of the Northeast Greenland National Park, in the north and west by Qeqqata Press Office and to the south by municipality Kujalleq.

History

Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq was established with effect January 1, 2009 through merger of the former municipalities Ivittuut, Paamiut, Nuuk, Ittoqqortoormiit and Ammassalik. The municipality thus parts of the former counties Kitaa and tunu.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality was designed by Tina Windahl hall and shows the ice-covered sea, a stone man and the sun.
