Sernftal tramway

The Sernftalbahn ( SETB ) was an electric narrow-gauge railway (1000 mm) in the Swiss canton of Glarus, which was operated by the same private railway company. She led - mostly on the valley road - Schwanden in Sernftal 14 km along the Sernf up to Elm. The railcars were direct current ( first 750, then 800 volts ) is driven from its own hydroelectric plant and a diesel engine generators group. The management was in Engi in the middle of the track.

The opening movement of persons was held on August 7, 1905 held the freight followed on 4 September 1905. He was especially for the textile industry and the quarries in Sernftal important. 1949 were delivered three new contemporary railcar, which the daily operation could be handled with a contemporary rolling stock. However, the train was discontinued after years of discussion about their future in the process of expanding the valley road on May 31, 1969, replaced by a bus line. The three railcar from 1949 could be sold to the Aigle- Ollon - Monthey- Champéry railway ( AOMC ) for the valley section Aigle- Ollon - Monthey. From there, they were then sold to Stern & Hafferl in Austria, where two still are in operation. From the infrastructure, the former station building in Engi and Elm are still preserved.

The company name Sernftalbahn was renamed the farm conversion in car Sernftal. This bus runs along the main line, some regional lines in and around Schwanden. Since the nineties, the car Sernftal is responsible for the rail replacement rates between Schwanden and Linthal.

Since April 2009 there in Engi a museum, " Sernftalbahnmuseum " on the former Sernftalbahn. This museum is operated by the existing club since October 2006 Sernftalbahn.
