Serotonylation

The serotonylation is a biochemical process in which the biogenic amine is serotonin transferred to glutamine residues of proteins by the enzyme transglutaminase II. Target proteins for this process are especially small GTPases. The serotonylation takes place as an intracellular process within the cell and is used to control the signal transduction within the cell. Thus, the function of serotonin is different than tissue hormone and neurotransmitter in the serotonylation of its cell - to-cell communication service function. An important role of serotonylation is believed inter alia in blood coagulation and in the regulation of insulin release.
