Serra do Buçaco

The Serra do Buçaco (also Serra do Bussaco ) is a wooded mountain range in Central Portugal. A portion ( 105 ha ) is available as Mata Nacional do Buçaco ( " National Forest of Bussaco " ) under protection. During the Portuguese colonial history, the sailors brought plants from the newly discovered countries, so often referred to as enchanted fairytale forest, of marked hiking and walking trails criss-crossed the forest with 300 exotic and 400 native species of trees and shrubs provides an unusual botanical blend.

1628 took over the preservation of the forest, the newly emerged Carmelite convent of Santa Cruz do Buçaco, and since 1653 the forest was also under the pope, who threatened with excommunication all who felled a tree protection. The spa town of Luso, the Serra do Buçaco rises to 549 meters, but the Lookout Point is usually da Cruz Alta specified as a peak.

It was here in 1810 instead of the Battle of Buçaco, in the Napoleonic invasion army was defeated under Gen.Massená of an Anglo - Portuguese army under Gen.Wellington.
