Session Manager Subsystem

The Session Manager smss.exe is a file with the name and part of the Windows NT -based operating systems.

At system startup, the session manager is invoked after loading the system drivers. It has the following tasks:

  • Start of CHKDSK if the system was not shut down properly
  • Creating environment variables
  • Start the Win32 subsystem ( win32k.sys, winsrv.dll, csrss.exe ). This allows you to start the GUI.
  • Setting up the virtual memory
  • Replacing system files that can not be replaced during normal operation
  • Winlogon.exe starting the Windows NT logon process

After the operating system starts the session manager remains resident in memory and waits for the system to be shut down to take the necessary measures in this respect.
