Setau

Setau was Viceroy of Kush under the ancient Egyptian King (Pharaoh) Ramses II He was the chief administrator of the Nubian provinces. He is good with 100 occupied properties to the best-attested officials under this ruler.

Setau of the Viceroy of Kush is attested from the 38th year of the reign of Ramses II in office. He was at least until year 63 of the ruler in office, which is one of the longest tenures occupied a viceroy of Kush. He began his career as a pupil of the palace, is then assigned as a great writer of the vizier and then became senior asset manager of Amun in the southern city.

As viceroy of Kush built or renovated Setau especially south of Thebes and Nubia in numerous temples. Noteworthy are its own chapel in Elkab and restoration work on the temple of Abu Simbel. He was also the construction of the Temple of Gerf Hussein and Wadi es- Sebua involved. For the construction work at the latter temple the recruitment of forced laborers from Irem is noted. Setau also took part in military actions of the ruler in Nubia.

His grave and that of his wife Mutnofret is located in Dra Abu el- Naga ( TT 288/289 ). It has not yet been studied systematically. His wife Mutnofret seems to have played a special role, as it is always mentioned together with her husband.
