Seung Sahn

Seung Sahn (* 1927 in Seun Choen, Korea, † November 30, 2004 in Seoul) was a South Korean Zen master.

As a young man he studied Western philosophy at Dong - Guk University in Seoul. At twenty, he became a monk of the Chogey Order, the largest Buddhist order in South Korea. Here he laid his birth name Lee Dok - in and took his monastic name Seung Sahn, the Hanja are the same as those of Mount Song.

After a 100 -day solitary retreat he was tested by Zen Master Ko Bong and received at the age of 22 years, on 25 January 1949, when only student Dharma transmission to the Zen Master. He is thus the 78th patriarch in the lineage of the Korean Buddhist Chogey Order.

In 1970 he moved to the United States over and founded the Kwan Um School of Zen in Providence, Rhode Iceland. The school maintains today centers around the world, with emphasis in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

During his life, Zen Master Seung Sahn has given eleven master broadcasts, and he also gave some advanced students who are called Ji Do Poep Sa Nim or Dharma Master, the instructor rating ( Inca ).

From his students, he is addressed with the title " Dae Soen Sa Nim " ( DSSN ), "revered Zen Master ".

Zen Master Seung Sahn has published a number of English-language books, including " The Whole World Is A Single Flower ", " Dropping Ashes on the Buddha ", " Ten Gates", "Only do not know", "Only doing it for 60 Years", " Compass of Buddhism ." There are three German translations.
