Chabinas ( Cendere Çayı )

The Chabinas Bridge, Cendere Bridge (Turkish: Cendere Köprüsü ) or Septimius Severus bridge is an ancient bridge near Eski Kahta ( Adiyaman province ) in the Southeast. The under Emperor Septimius Severus ( 193-211 AD) built arch bridge over the Chabinas ( Cendere Çayı ) has an inside diameter of 34,20 m, one of the largest arches under all extant Roman bridges.

Formation

The bridge was built at the end of the second century by the stationed in Samosata Legio XVI Flavia Firma under the command of Lucius Marius Perpetuus than the corresponding march and supply routes should be put in order by imperial order due to planned extensive military operations against the Parthians. The Latin inscription can be seen that at that time an existing bridge a solo ( " from scratch" ) has been replaced. For lack of time the stone material was removed for the construction of large quantities of the nearby Commagene Hierothesion on Karakuş and brought here.

Of the original four pillars, which were respectively on either side of the bridge inputs are still three available. The two on the southwest side bear Latin inscriptions honor of the emperor and his wife Julia Domna. On the opposite side only is the column with the inscription for Caracalla, the son and later successor of Severus. The fourth column, which was probably associated with his brother Geta, was probably removed 212 after its damnatio memoriae.

In 1998, the bridge was renovated and approved for vehicles up to 5 tons; at the same time a new bridge for the heavy traffic was built at some distance. In 2005, the bridge collapsed completely, as a Turkish tanker truck improperly tried to cross it. The blocks were then purified and partially replaced; now the building is back to the old location.
