Sežana

Sežana (Italian Sesana, German Zizan ) is a town in Slovenia, near the Italian border near Trieste. According to her, the nearby border crossing Sežana is named, and the resort is located on the railway line pitch - Strasbourg -Trieste. The community is particularly known for her stud farm Lipica. The town has 4,866 inhabitants ( 2005).

Attractions

The best-known attraction is the district in Lipica (Italian: Lipizza ) based stud farm Lipica, where the origin for the breeding of the Lipizzaner was laid. The stud was founded by Archduke Charles, the brother of Maximilian II, in 1580. From here, the breed expanded to the neighboring countries.

The structure of the stud was very hard, because there was no suitable land for horses in the Karst Mountains. So initially failed the cultivation of oats and pasture land, which required a longer transport of feed. Also, there was no water in the area of ​​the stud, so that every drop of rain had to be collected in large cisterns. Since that was not enough, so-called potions sheets were designed, which were to have the morning dew. Despite these obstacles, the Lipizzaner breed was a great success and the stud was to pass after a short time be able to excess foals to other studs.

The stud farm now consists of 400 horses.
