Sfatul Țării

The Sfatul Ţării ( German Provincial ) was an educated on November 2, 1917 National General Assembly of Bessarabia. This provincial government determined the fate of the former Russian province of Bessarabia after the Czar was overthrown in the house of the February Revolution of 1917.

About 1,000 delegates from Bessarabia chose the provincial government at a congress in the Bessarabian capital Kishinev. It consisted of 120 people, including 84 members of Romanians and 36 Other parts of the population as well as 10 people from Transnistria. Its president was Ion Inculet (Russian Ivan Konstantinovich Inkulez ) attached to the University of Saint Petersburg taught science until then and took part actively in the revolutionary events. The creation of the National Council was made possible through the assistance of the military in a soldier Congress in October 1917 in Kishinev. In the chaotic conditions of the revolutionary period, the military was the last power potential. The army commander of the Russian army in Bessarabia appealed against the command of the General Staff of the soldiers a congress with 500 delegates soldiers. It was decided the election of the National Council among others. Anywhere in the Russian provinces came together such military conferences to decide about the fate of their region.

On January 24, 1918, Bessarabia declared as first independent Moldavian Democratic Republic, to proclaim in March 1918 with great enthusiasm of the people to connect to Romania with the following wording:

On 27 November 1918 the union with Romania was completed and the Sfatul Ţării broke up.
