Sforza Castle

Castello Sforzesco is a castle in Milan. It stands on the Piazza Castello in the northwest of the old town.

History

The mighty crowned by battlements of the fort was built from 1450 by Francesco I Sforza at the site in the years 1360 to 1370 and in 1447 destroyed castle of the Visconti family built. In 1490 Bramante has created some frescoes for the Sala del Tesoro, today it is only preserved a fresco. Also have the facility to Leonardo da Vinci worked, Filarete and Cesare Cesariano.

The parks are created in the style of an English garden with flower beds. In it are, inter alia, to an arena, a viewing tower and the neoclassical triumph arch Arco della Pace ( Peace Gate ) from the years 1807 to 1838.

In the years 1833-1905 the plant was extensively restored. Some war damage occurred due to a bombing in 1943; they were eliminated later.

Museums

The castle now houses several museums such as the Museo d' Arte Antica and the Archaeological Museum (Museo della Preistoria ). Among the exhibits, among others heard the sculpture Pieta Rondanini from the years 1553-1564, an unfinished work by Michelangelo.

In 2012, approximately 100 drawings and paintings were discovered from the estate of Simone Peterzano in the Castello Sforzesco, which are his famous pupil Caravaggio attributed.
