The " SIGRI GmbH" went back to 1878 in Berlin, founded as a subsidiary of Siemens AG " Gebr Siemens & Co " ( Gesco ). Initially the company produced charcoal pencils. In 1920 the company built a branch factory in Meitingen and merged in 1928 with the counterparties located in the Upper Silesian Ratibor " Planiawerke AG Coal production " to the new "Siemens AG Planiawerke Coal brands ".

During the Second World War, Siemens presented Planiawerke among others the graphite rudder for the V2 rocket forth.

After the Second World War came the merger of Meitinger plant the "Siemens AG Planiawerke Coal Makes " with the Chemische Fabrik Griesheim to "Siemens Plania Chemical Factory Griesheim ", which was acquired a majority share of Hoechst AG in 1953. In 1967, the "Siemens AG Planiawerke Coal brands " by fusion with the electrode fabrication of Hoechst AG majority under the umbrella of the chemical group. There they merged and other companies Hoechst AG together with the "Siemens Plania Chemical Factory Griesheim ", 1985 renamed " SIGRI GmbH" and finally completely taken over by Hoechst AG in 1989.

After the merger with the " Great Lakes Carbon " Hoechst AG was involved in the new company, with fifty percent of the shares. The remaining interest was sold in 1996 following the restructuring of the Hoechst Group, since then the SGL Carbon AG is in free float.

As a result of the economic crisis 2007/2008 invested SGL Carbon in further production locations and subsidiaries as SGL Rotec GmbH & Co. KG. ( Eg production of rotor blades for wind turbines ), SGL Kümpers GmbH & Co. KG, SGL epo GmbH, Benteler SGL GmbH & Co. KG. , Dr. Schnabel GmbH, SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers GmbH & Co. KG.

On 27 January 2009, SGL Carbon changed the legal form of a stock corporation (AG) into a European Company (SE).

In 2010 it was announced that the company cooperates with the car manufacturer BMW in the project BMW i3 ( Megacity Vehicle) to produce lighter cars.
