Shaft (company)

Y.K. Shaft (Japanese有限 会社 シャフト, Yugen - gaisha Shafuto ) is a Japanese animation studio, founded on 1 September 1975 by Hiroshi Wakao. More recently, the studio for his unusual sense of humor and an often into the Experimental drifting style is known. These include in particular recent works such as Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei or Bakemonogatari.

History

Shaft was founded on September 1, 1975 by Hiroshi Wakao, a former animator of Mushi Productions. It was initially planned to animate separate works. However, the first studio frequently worked as a subcontractor. So the studio was involved, for example in the production of The Castle of Cagliostro. Only in 1987 appeared with Yume kara samenai (夢 から,さめ ない) the first independent work, the others followed.

In 2000, began after the completion of a DVD specials from Gunbuster Gainax in cooperation with a long-term collaboration between the two studios. So they produced together the series Mahoromatic, Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai and He Is My Master.

After founder Hiroshi Wakao 2004 went into retirement, Mitsutoshi Kubota took over the leadership of the studio. As a result, the character department has been reduced in favor of the digital working group. Since then, Akiyuki Shimbo, Tatsuya Oishi and Shin Onuma worked on most productions of Shaft, what with the title Tsukuyomi - Moon phase began, and it also developed a unique style of the studio. So the free surfaces with writings were provided in many works that are simultaneously diverse allusions to other productions.
