In polarization microscopy is denoted by Chagrin an apparent relief on the surface of a mineral grain in a rock thin section. By determining the Chagrinstärke can conclude on the relative refractive index of the studied mineral. Is the refractive index of the mineral is higher than the surrounding medium, usually a resin, the Chagrin is stronger. Is he on the other hand is smaller, and the Chagrin is less.
