Shah Alam is the capital of the Malaysian state of Selangor. The city center is about 25 km southwest of Kuala Lumpur. According to the census from July 2006 584.360 people live in Shah Alam.

The city was founded in 1963. It was named after Sultan Alam Shah Hisamuddin, the father died in 1960 and the predecessor of the reigning Sultan of Selangor Salahuddin Abdul Aziz. Formerly to oil palm and rubber plantations were on the today's city. In 1978, Shah Alam, capital of the most populous Malaysian state of Selangor, after 1974, the original capital of Kuala Lumpur was separated from Selangor and Federal Territory and then raised to the sound temporarily exercised the capital function. On 10 October 2000 Shah Alam was raised as 7th place in Malaysia to the city ( Bandar raya " big city ").

Shah Alam has a similar structure as the neighboring towns of Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya. The most famous building in town is the completed on 11 March 1988 Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque. It is the largest mosque in Malaysia. Also located in Shah Alam, a large modern multi-functional stadium, the Shah Alam Stadium, which holds 60,000 spectators.

There are several shopping centers with a variety of shops, both national as well as international companies. The nightlife Shah Alam offers despite size of the city, due to the high proportion of Muslims, not many nightlife options.
