Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences

The Academy of Social Sciences Shanghai (Chinese上海 社会 科学院, english Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences ( SASS ) ), which is headed by Wang Ronghua, was founded in 1958 and is the oldest and, next to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, the largest institution of Humanities - social Sciences in the PRC. In addition to financing the SASS by funds of the municipal government of Shanghai, the SASS obtains its funds from various non-governmental donors from Germany and abroad.

As a leading think- tank and respected academic institution in China, the SASS publishes a number of publications that take the relevant influence on politics and society. The SASS has 15 institutes and 19 multidisciplinary centers, where is researched on different topics using the humanities and social sciences.

The focus is on the new problems caused by the current development of China in society and economy. Research areas are: economy, economics, global economy, law, literature, history, philosophy, computer science, journalism, sociology, youth research, theology, demography, international relations, national strategies and regional developments.

The SASS currently has over 700 employees, of which 465 are engaged in research. Among the researchers of the SASS are 124 ordinary, extraordinary 133 and 130 assisting professors. 287 of professorships are held by women.
