Shannon Matilda Wells Lucid ( born January 14, 1943 as Shannon Matilda Wells in Shanghai, China) is a former American astronaut.

Lucid was born in Shanghai, China in a missionary family. During the Japanese occupation of China her family was interned, but was able to emigrate to the United States in 1944 and lived in Fort Worth. After the war the family returned to China, where Lucid also went to elementary school. The high school she attended in Bethany, Oklahoma, after which they took at the University of Oklahoma to study chemistry, and in 1963 gained a bachelor. 1970 followed by a master's degree in biochemistry and three years later a doctorate.

Astronauts activity

Lucid was selected in January 1978 for the astronaut team of NASA. This was the first group in which women were admitted.

Your first space flight took Lucid in June 1985 aboard the U.S. space shuttle Discovery mission STS -51 -G. Other shuttle missions in 1989 followed with STS -34, STS -43 in 1991 and 1993 with STS -58.

But she is best known for her fifth spaceflight, when she spent 188 days in space, 179 days of which for the Shuttle -Mir program on the Russian space station Mir. On March 22, 1996, she has been associated with STS -76 to Mir and arrived on 26 September 1996 with STS -79 back to earth. Both missions were carried out with the space shuttle Atlantis. Your stay at the Mir should not really be so long, but its return was delayed twice by a total of six weeks.

2005 she was a speaker connection ( Capcom ) during the STS -114 mission, and in May 2011 during the STS -134 mission in July 2011 and also during the last shuttle mission STS- 135th

Lucid left NASA in January 2012.
