Shapland Hugh Swinny

Shapland Hugh Swinny ( born January 30, 1857 in Dublin, † August 31 1923 in London) was an Irish economist and a supporter of the idea of positivism, the French philosopher Auguste Comte.

He was born in Dublin in 1857, the son of Captain Shapland Swiny and studied at St. John College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1884 with a Master of Arts.

Swinny joined the London Positivist Society and was the successor of Edward Spencer Beesley as president of the London Positivist Society ( 1901-1923 ). In addition, he was also editor of the positivist Review and Chairman of the Council of the Sociological Society from 1907 to 1909, moreover, a co-founder of the Church of Humanity, along with Philip F. Thomas. Swinny was a personal friend of several Indian nationalists, including Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
