Shatin, Armenia

Schatin (Armenian Շատին ), other transcription Shatin, until 1935 Hasankend ( Hasankand ) is a village and a rural municipality ( hamaynkner ) with about 2000 inhabitants in the province südarmenischen Wajoz Dzor northwest of the provincial capital Jeghegnadsor.

Schatin situated on 1251 meters in the valley of the Jeghegis, a 47 km long tributary of the Arpa, on the highway M10, which branches off ten kilometers south of the village Getap of the M2 between Areni and Jeghegnadsor and the 2400 meter high Selim Pass to southern shore of Lake Sevan leads. The center is located about half a kilometer east of the M10 at the widest point of the river valley. While the pass road follows a valley in a northerly direction, passing another road upstream on Jeghegis along that breaks off to the northeast at Schatin. They eventually reached after about six kilometers to the place Jeghegis and in an arc to the south the M2 near Vayk. Two miles behind Schatin branches off from the road leading to the Jeghegis another side street to the north and crosses soon the long-drawn village Artabuynk. On the ridge between the two valleys is dominated by the ruins of the medieval fortress Smbataberd from which to walk in a northerly direction, the high hidden in the mountains former monastery Tsaghats Kar reach it.

For former monastery Shativank to 1612 meters above sea level leads to the river bridge in the town center a passable with four-wheel path on a slope initially south to the cemetery, then climbs in switchbacks up the hill and ends after seven kilometers at the nearby from the village to the northeast ruins. A footpath from the northern end of the town, which initially follows a stream in a valley bisected about this route.

In Schatin on Jeghegis are two small hydroelectric power plants in operation. A total of six of these plants are to be built along the river.
