Shehu Shagari

Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari ( born February 25, 1925) was from 1979 to 1983, President of Nigeria.

Shagari made ​​after training as a high school teacher, a political career in the First Republic. From 1954 to 1958 he was a Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives, then ( until 1959 ) he was Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa of 1958-59. By the end of the First Republic in 1966 and in subsequent military governments, he held several ministerial posts.

From 1977 to 1978, a member of the Constituent Assembly of 1977-78. Shagari was co-founder of the " National Party of Nigeria " and presidential candidate. In 1979 he was elected President of the Second Republic. In December 1983, however, he was overthrown by the military coup of General Muhammadu Buhari. From 1984-1986 he was under house arrest, then he drew largely from politics. With the beginning of the Fourth Republic, he returned as an "elder statesman" back in an advisory capacity. One of his sons became ministers in the cabinet of 1999 elected President Olusegun Obasanjo.
