Inner Kartli (Georgian შიდა ქართლი, Shida Kartli; completely შიდა ქართლის მხარე, Shida Kartlis Mchare ) is a region in Georgia. Capital of the region of Gori. Inner Kartli is divided into six municipalities ( munizipaliteti ), which are named after their administrative headquarters Chaschuri, Djawa, Gori, Kareli, Kaspi and Tskhinvali.

The conflict in South Ossetia

For the most part on the territory Inner Kartli is the autonomous since 1922, proclaimed in 1990 in the period of the disintegration of the Soviet Union republic of South Ossetia, which lost the autonomy within Georgia in return. Inhabited by Ossetians, South Ossetia seeks to state secession from Georgia or the connection to the Russian Republic of North Ossetia-Alania. South Ossetia has long been not recognized internationally, but in the course of the Caucasus War in 2008 took place on 26 August 2008, the recognition as an independent state by Russia ( simultaneously with the recognition of Abkhazia ), and later by some other states. Approximately 95 percent of South Ossetians have Russian citizenship, which they were able to acquire since the collapse of the USSR and the independence of Georgia.

As a result of the conflict are parts of the municipalities Inner Kart Liens not out of South Ossetia in the form of partly deviating tailored administrative units within the control of the Georgian central government, but are: the territory of the municipality Djawa as part of Rajons dsau, the northern part of the municipality of Gori and Tskhinvali as Rajon Tskhinvali, the northern part of the municipality Kareli as Rajon Snaur.
