Shigatse Prefecture

Xigaze ( Shigatse ) referred to in modern Tibet both an administrative district, as well as its capital, the district-free city of Shigatse which is the second largest city of Tibet Autonomous Region to Lhasa.

Designation

The county is essentially the space from that in the traditional Tibetan province or region Tsang (Tibetan: gtsang ) accounted for. From this name, the Chinese name for the Tibetans generally derives from: " Zang ". Together with the central province of Ü ( Tib. dbus ) to the capital, Lhasa, was in ancient China for centuries with ' Wusi Zang ' ( Hanyu Pinyin for Tib. dbus gtsang ) or later ' Wei - Zang ' ( for U-Tsang ) referred to Central Tibet. The different pronunciations sound shifts reflect that took place in the last 600 years in Tibetan. What remains is the term ' Zang ' for both the Tibetans in general and for the Shigatse managed from west-central Tibet. For the politically defined Tibet Autonomous Region in China which is also derived name ' Xizang ' ( " Western Tibet [ ish besieltes field ]") is valid.

The county

The county of Xigaze is located in the southwest of Tibet Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China. Its capital city was formerly the capital of the Tibetan region Tsang.

With 17 counties and one independent city of Shigatse district government has an area of 182,000 km ² and around 640,000 inhabitants (2003 ).

In Shigatse agriculture is possible, especially in the valleys to the main river Tsangpo ( Yarlung Tsangpo ). There mainly highland barley and wheat, as well as potatoes and canola are grown.
