Shimane University

The University of Shimane (Japanese岛 根 大学, Shimane daigaku, in short: Shimadai (岛 大) ) is a state university in Japan. The main campus is located in Matsue in Shimane Prefecture.

History

The (older) Shimane University was founded in 1949 by the merger of three state schools. The three were:

  • High school Matsue (松江 高等学校, Matsue Kōtō Gakko, founded in 1920 ),
  • The normal school Shimane (岛 根 师范学校, Shimane shihan Gakko, founded in 1875 ), and
  • Youth Normal School Shimane (岛 根 青年 师范学校, Shimane his shihan Gakko in Izumo, founded in 1933 ).

The university was opened with two faculties: Humanities and Natural Sciences, and Faculty of Education. In 1965, the prefectural farming high school Shimane (岛 根 県 立 岛 根 农科 大学, Shimane Shimane kenritsu Noka daigaku, founded in 1921 ) to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. 2003, the (older) Shimane University and the Medical University of Shimane were (岛 根 医科大学, Shimane ika daigaku, founded in 1975 ) for recent University of Shimane merged.
