Shimun XXII Paulos

Mar Shimun XXII. Polos (* 1885 in Qudshanis; † May 9, 1920 in Baquba ) was a Catholicos - Patriarch of the East Syrian autocephalous " Church of the East ".

After the violent death of Catholicos - Patriarch Mar Shimun XXI. Benyamin at ( 3 ) March 16, 1918 joined his younger brother Polos his successor. He was elected to Salama's on ( 11 ) 23 March and on ( 14 ) April 29, 1918 in St. Mary's Church to Urmia (Iran ) by the Metropolitan Mar Eskhaq Khnanisho ( 1884-1918 ) and the bishops Mar Eliya Abuna of Alqosh (1862-1955, from 1921 catholic), Mar Yosip Khnanisho ( 1914-1977 ) and Mar Zaya Sargis of Jilu († 1951) ordained. The military situation of the Assyrians soon became hopeless. For fear of Turks, Kurds and Iranians fled Shimun XXII. with his people, around 60,000 people, from Urmia to Iraq in order to insinuate on August 20, 1918, the protection of the British. Heading died about 15,000. The survivors were in the camp Baquba, about 50 km north of Baghdad, interned, who suffered from tuberculosis, Shimun XXII. in April 1919 spent on vacation in the Syrian Orthodox monastery Mor Mattai in Mosul. After his early death on (April 27 ) May 9, 1920 buried him. On the Armenian cemetery of Baghdad The entire episcopate of the autocephalous " Church of the East " was at that time only four bishops: Mar Yosip Khnanisho of Rustaqa, Mar Zaya Sargis of Jilu, Mar Yalda Yahballaha of Barwar († 1951) and Mar Abimalek Timothy Malabar (South India).
