Purpose of the station is to connect the Shinkansen to the local rail network since a direct integration of the Osaka train station three kilometers away was considered unfeasible in the line network of Shinkansen because of its location in the city center. The Shin- Osaka Station provides connections of the Tōkaidō Main Line, the Takarazuka Line and the subway Osaka, is each a separate part for the station.

Metro Station Shin- Osaka Midosuji Line subway Osaka was opened on 24 September 1964. On 1 October 1964, the Shinkansen began operations. The station Shin- Osaka formed then the endpoint of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen connection with Tokyo.

In March 1972, the extension of the Shinkansen line was put into operation. The San'yo Shinkansen initially led to Okayama, since March of 1975, the line is extended to Hakata ( Fukuoka ). The San'yo Shinkansen is connected with the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, some trains run continuously between Tokyo and Hakata.
