Shirakami-Sanchi

Shirakami Sanchi (Japanese白 神山 地, dt " Shirakami mountain land") is since 1993 a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Honshū in Japan.

This mountainous, unspoiled woodlands, in the prefectures of Akita and Aomori. Of the total area of the beech forest of 1.300 km ² is a particularly well-preserved area of 169.7 km ² part of World Heritage. Shirakami Sanchi is bordered to the east by the Reserve Tsugaru.

The recognized as a World Heritage area was never open to human activities, there are no paths in the area and this should remain so. Access is possible only with the permission of the administration, fishing is possible only with the permission of both the management and the fishing cooperative.

The notch - Beech is totally unsuitable for the culture of shiitake. Therefore, the book has not been affected as surrounding forests by shiitake growers. In addition to the book there is katsura trees ( Katsura ), Kalopanax septemlobus ( Harigiri ), Japanese hop hornbeam ( Ostrya japonica, Asada ) and other tree species.

The Anmonnotaki ( the Twilight Falls ) are a triple waterfall and popular tourist attraction. These are, although situated in the World Heritage Site, easy to reach on foot.

In the area Animals occur as the black woodpecker, the Japanese golden eagle, Nepal Hawk-Eagle, the Japanese Macaque, the Japanese dormouse and the Asian black bear.

The Shirakamidake is the highest peak of the area. It offers a beautiful view and is not equipped as part of the protected area without permission and accessible toilets and shelter.

At the foot of Shirakami Sanchi is in Hachimori (since 2006 Happo ) an annual known in Japan open-air concert in the district Yamamoto Akita Prefecture - the Yūkyū no Mori (悠久 の 杜) - organized.
