Shirley Goodman

Shirley Goodman ( born June 19, 1936 in New Orleans, Louisiana as Shirley Mae Goodman, † July 5, 2005 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American R & B singer, both in the 1950s as the mid- 1970s was an international success.

Career

Shirley & Lee

Shirley Goodman's career began with her school friend Leonard Lee ( * June 29, 1936, † 23 October 1976) in singing duo Shirley & Lee. Already their debut single I'm Gone on Aladdin Records in 1952 reached the second place on the Billboard R & B charts. Written and produced was the song which later had great influence on the development of Jamaican ska and reggae, from Dave Bartholomew. As a musician Bartholomew's band with pianist Allen Toussaint, bassist Frank Fields, Earl Palmer on drums, and saxophonist Lee Allen, Alvin Tyler and Herb Hardesty were involved in the recording.

Mid -1950s, they changed their style of music. The value written by Leonard Lee rock'n'roll Title Let the Good Times Roll in 1956 placed at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 The next single I Feel Good came in the top 40 of the pop singles chart. 1962 separated the duo. Leonard Lee then took on some less successful solo albums.

Session singer

Mid -1960s, Goodman went to California. As a session singer, she has participated in recordings of Dr. John's 1968 album Gris -Gris with (for example, I Walk on Gilded Splinters ), Sonny & Cher and Jackie DeShannon. The Rolling Stones Let It Loose Title ( Exile on Main Street, 1972) they can be heard as a background singer.

Shirley & Company

The end of 1974 they got from the singer, producer and record label owner of Sylvia Robinson the offer to sing lead vocals on the book written by her disco tracks Shame, Shame, Shame. The male vocals took Jesus Alvarez, who was instrumental track from the studio musicians Walter Morris ( guitar), Bernadette Randle (keyboards), Seldon Powell ( sax ), Jonathan Williams ( bass) and Clarence Oliver (drums) recorded. The as Shirley & Company on vibration (All Platinum) single released in early 1975 became one of the first worldwide disco hits and peaked in the Billboard chart No. 12, UK No. 6 and was in Germany for three weeks at the top position. The follow-up singles Disco Shirley and Cry Cry Cry were far less successful, and Shirley Goodman retired shortly afterwards completely out of the music business.

Shirley Goodman died on 5 July 2005 in Los Angeles.
