Shkëlqim Cani

Shkëlqim Cani ( born May 6, 1956 in Tirana) is an Albanian politician and member of the Socialist Party. Since 2013 he is Minister of Finance in the Cabinet under Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Biography

Cani graduated in 1980 a degree in finance and between 1981 and 1983 postgraduate studies in foreign trade at the University of Tirana. In 1991 he wrote a dissertation in the field of banking and gained a doctorate in economics. After his postgraduate studies Cani 1985 President of the Foreign Department and member of the Supervisory Board of Banka e Shqipërisë. He was able to attend training programs in the countries Bank ( 1985) and from the Deutsche Bundesbank ( 1989).

As in Albania, the nearly 50 -year-old socialist dictatorship was overthrown in 1990/91, the central bank saw how many other state institutions a structural change. Cani then moved in 1990 to the Commercial Bank of Albania (Albanian Banka Tregtare Shqipërisë e ), where he spent a year as Director General.

Then Cani joined the Albanian politics. He was as a representative of the Party of Labour of Albania into Kuvendi i Shqipërisë for the XII. Legislature elected. In addition, he was in 1991 February 22-June 12 Member of the Government and served as Deputy Prime Minister Fatos Nano. He was re- elected to Parliament in 1992 and was during the entire legislative period to 1996 Member of the Parliamentary Commission of Economy and Finance. Between 1994 and 1997 he was also a board member of the Lions Club in Albania.

In the 1997 parliamentary elections Cani was again re-elected to Parliament, and was for some months a member of the Parliamentary Commission of Economy, Finance and Privatization, however, was forced to resign from the post after he was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Albania. During his time as President of the Central Bank until 2004 Cani was also Governor of the International Monetary Fund and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency in Albania. Between 1997 and 2002 he was also President of the Board of the Stock Exchange in Tirana. Since 2003, Cani professor at the University of Tirana.

2013 Cani was re- elected to Parliament and appointed by the newly elected Prime Minister Edi Rama of Finance.

Shkëlqim Cani Cani is married with Merita.

Cani is fluent in English, he has next to language skills in Italian, French, German and Russian.
