Shlomo Avineri

Shlomo Avineri ( born 1933 in Bielsko, Silesia, Poland) is an Israeli political scientist and historian of Silesian origin. He is a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Life

Avineri In 1939 he immigrated to Israel and studied history and social sciences at the University of Jerusalem there. He also studied at the London School of Economics. In 1973 he was appointed professor of political science at the Hebrew University. 1975 to 1977 he was Director General of the Israeli Foreign Ministry. In 1979, he worked as a member of the Egypt-Israel Commission, the cultural agreement between the two countries. At the University of Jerusalem, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Director of the Institute for European Studies.

He had guest professorships at the universities of Yale, Cornell, University of California, Oxford, Central European University (Budapest) and in 2003 also at the Scholl - Institute of the University of Munich.
