Shoryuhai

The Harvard Invitational Shoryuhai Intercollegiate Kendo Tournament, short Shoryuhai (Japanese升 竜 杯, Shoryu -hai, such as " Cup of the ascending dragon ") is a North American Kendo Tournament at Harvard University. The Shoryuhai is the largest Kendo competition at college level in the U.S. and is held annually.

History

In April 1997, the Shoryuhai was held for the first time, then with only 15 participants. Already in the following year, however, the group of participating universities has tripled. It took some students from Harvard, Yale, Cornell, McGill, the University of Waterloo and the University of Connecticut.

1998 donated the former Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto two trophies, one of which remains permanently at Harvard University and the other as a trophy will be awarded to each winning University of team competition.

In 2009 took a team from the University of Münster for the first time a European team in the tournament.

Host format

The tournament takes place in the Malkin Athletic Center (MAC) and is divided in two days on which team and individual competitions take place.
