Shreela Flather, Baroness Flather

Was raised Shreela Flather, Baroness Flather ( born February 13, 1934 in Lahore, Pakistan) is a British politician of the Conservative Party, which was not only the first female Hindu in British politics, but also the first woman from Asia coming to Life Peeress.

Life

Originally from Pakistan Shreela Flather began after school to study law at University College London and was awarded after graduating in 1962 qualified as a lawyer, but later worked as a teacher.

Her political career in the Conservative Party they began in 1976 when she was elected as the first woman from an ethnic minority in the UK as a member of the City Council of Windsor and Maidenhead. In the following years she served on numerous committees that dealt with issues such as reform of the penitentiary, housing, social services and minority rights. In addition, she worked from 1980 to 1986 Member of the Commission for racial equality.

In 1986, she was elected mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead. In 1987, moreover, her appointment as delegates of Great Britain in the European Economic and Social Committee.

On June 11, 1990, she became a Life Peeress with the title Baroness Flather, of Windsor and Maidenhead, raised to the Peerage of the United Kingdom, making it one as a member of the House of Lords on. She was thus the first of Asian origin woman who was raised to life Peeress.

She is also also deputy chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group and one of the patrons of the charity Child In Need India ( CINI ).
