Shūsei Tokuda

Tokuda Shusei (Japanese徳 田 秋声; born 1 February 1872 in Kanazawa as Matsuo Tokuda (徳 田 末 雄), † November 18, 1943 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese story writer and novelist.

Life

Tokuda was born into a family of the erstwhile feudal nobility. He first wrote tradition-bound and emotional narratives. Along side Toson Shimazaki, Katai Tayama and Masamune Hakucho as one of the leading exponents of the Japanese naturalism. With the end of naturalism in 1910 stagnated his literary productivity. It was not until 1920 Tokuda drew attention to himself by psychological narratives ( I - novel / shishosetsu ).
