Shvetsov ASh-62

The Shvetsov ASch -62 (referred to as M -62 before 1941 ) is an air-cooled nine-cylinder radial engine, which was manufactured in the Soviet Union. A version of this engine is produced in the People's Republic of China as HS-5.

Construction and Development

The ASch -62 is a further development of the Wright R -1820 Cyclone, which was produced in the Soviet Union in license as a Shvetsov M-25. The major improvements included a two-stage compressor and a more efficient intake system. Thus, the maximum power increased from 775 hp to 1000 hp. In 1937 the engine was first put into operation and is still produced today in Poland by WSK " PZL- Kalisz " as ASz -62 ( 2007). It is estimated that over 40,000 units were produced in the Soviet Union.

In the follow- variant M -63 to increase the maximum power at 1,100 hp was achieved by increasing the compression ratio ( 7.2:1 ) and the maximum allowable number of revolutions.
